Situated to the North of Lanzarote, the island of Graciosa, with 27 km ², is the largest of the Archipelago Chinijo, which also includes the isles of Alegranza, Montaña Clara and Roque del Este and Oeste. Together they form the Marine – Terrestrial Nature Reserve of the Archipelago Chinijo, the first to be declared by the Government of the Canary Islands. Its waters are protected by the Marine Reserve of La Graciosa Island and Isles to the North of Lanzarote. The terrestrial environment of the island excels for its volcanic landscapes of great beauty, dotted with dunes and sandy areas. It is a biologically rich area in endemic floral species, besides its importance as a step in the path of many protected migratory birds and as a breeding ground of some endangered birds. The only inhabited island of the Archipelago Chinijo: La Graciosa, has two villages, Caleta del Sebo and Pedro Barba, of which only the former is inhabited all-year-round by about 627 people, mostly living from fishing and tourism. The marine environment with its mild water temperatures have the necessary conditions for the existence of a wide variety of species of fauna and flora, spread over the various habitats both coastal and deep. The island of La Graciosa, with the exception of the urban populations of Caleta del Sebo and Pedro Barba, forms part of the State Heritage, being attached to the Autonomous Organization of National Parks by Ministerial Order of 10 October 2002.
